Cotswold Lavender Fields - useful tips to help plan your visit.

Cotswold Lavender is one of the most popular and breathtaking destinations to visit in the summer months. Nestled in the picturesque village of Snowshill, near Broadway – often referred to as the jewel of the Cotswolds – the rolling purple fields are truly something special.

The lavender fields are open during the flowering season, typically from June through to August, with July being the peak time to visit when the colour and scent are at their very best.

Each year, family photographers (myself included) return to capture beautiful, natural moments amongst the flowers. The soft purple tones of the lavender create the most stunning backdrop for family photos, and the addition of wildflowers makes it even more magical.

As a family photographer based in Cheltenham, Cotswolds, I’ve gathered a few helpful tips from my experience photographing at Cotswold Lavender to help you make the most of your visit.

Planning Your Visit

Cotswold Lavender is a popular destination, especially during weekends and peak season. There is on-site parking available, along with toilet facilities near the main entrance.

There is also a designated photographer meeting point, although I usually meet my clients just inside the entrance near the benches for ease.

You’ll also find a hut selling drinks, snacks, and ice cream — perfect for little breaks — along with benches where you can sit and take in the views.

What to Expect on the Day

As you might expect during the height of summer, it can get very warm. There is little shade out in the lavender fields, so I always recommend bringing sunhats and applying suncream before your session.

The bees are very much part of the experience too — they are busy doing their job amongst the lavender. While they are generally not a problem, I do suggest bringing insect repellent just in case. As with any countryside location, there is always a small risk of bites or stings.

(From experience — my own daughter was stung last year, but the staff on site were incredibly helpful and quick to assist, which was very reassuring.)

Access & Practicalities

Most all-terrain pushchairs manage well around the fields, as the ground is mainly grass. However, after periods of rain it can become muddy, so it’s always worth planning footwear accordingly.

Comfortable shoes are the way forward— this is not the place for heels!

What to Wear for Lavender Field Photos

Choosing the right outfits can make a huge difference to how your final gallery looks. For your Cotswolds family photoshoot, I recommend:

  • Soft neutrals (whites, creams, beige)
  • Gentle pastels (dusty blues, soft pinks, pale yellows)

These tones beautifully complement the purple hues of the lavender and help create a soft, timeless feel.

Flowy dresses, linen fabrics, and long skirts photograph particularly well, adding movement and elegance to your images.

I always suggest avoiding:

  • Neon colours
  • Bold, distracting patterns
  • Very dark tones like black

And most importantly — wear something you feel comfortable and confident in.

Making the Most of Your Visit

Cotswold Lavender isn’t just a photoshoot location, it’s somewhere you can truly slow down and enjoy. I often recommend bringing a picnic and a blanket. You can easily spend a couple of hours wandering the fields, soaking in the scenery, and letting little ones explore.

My Mini Sessions at Cotswold Lavender

I provide all of my clients with a preparation guide ahead of their session, including everything you need to know, from what to wear to how to help your children feel relaxed and enjoy the experience.

I’ll be returning to the lavender fields again this year, offering a limited number of Cotswold Lavender mini sessions for one day only.

I can’t wait to be back in such a beautiful setting, capturing more special family moments 💜
